How Does Macbeth's Character Change throughout the play?

In the Play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, we see how the Character Macbeth changes physically and morally throughout the play. We see his moral change from being a noble hero to a driven powered maniac, we see how his relationship with Lady Macbeth changes from being a dominant part of his life to a recessive part of his life and we see his Physical change from being a night and shining armour of Scotland to a worried tyrant.

Macbeth is a noble hero of Scotland, he is like today’s Will Smith, he is the person everyone wants to be with and know, and he is basically ‘Mr Popular’. Macbeth is an important figure of the Scottish kingdom, he has bravely fought in Norway for his Proud Scottish Kingdom. Macbeth is such an honourable man under the eyes of King Duncan and Scotland that he has been given the title of Thane of Glamis for his hard working and brave leadership skills. To reinforce this point the king of Scotland praised him and said ‘‘For brave Macbeth, well he deserves that name.’’ This quote shows us that Macbeth is like King Duncan’s pet, a person that is highly regarded by the king. This gives us evidence to believe that Macbeth is an honourable and noble war hero. But this all changes when he meets the Witches, Macbeth meets the witches with his best friend Banquo, they question whether the witches are human or not and say ‘‘that not look like the inhabitants of the Earth’’. The witches turn Macbeth into a driven powered maniac by their prophecy ‘‘All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter!’’ The witches have stunned Macbeth because Macbeth knows he is Thane of Glamis but doesn’t know he is Thane of Cawdor and King, Macbeth responds with the ‘Me king, can’t be’ attitude, but secretly wants to be king. The witches have planted the idea that Macbeth will be king and now Macbeth starts thinking of life as king thus driving him into mad for power. The witches have succeeded with their prophecy because now the order of society is starting to fall, which is the main goal for witches. This is where Macbeths character starts to fall and change morally because ironically the witches prophesy said that Macbeth will be thane of Cawdor and king, and King Duncan announces that Macbeth is the new Thane of Cawdor, this shows Macbeth that the witches prophesy is becoming true and maybe he will be king.

Macbeth’s relationship with his wife Lady Macbeth changes from being dominant to Recessive. Lady Macbeth was the dominant figure in the relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, she would bully, tease, and mock Macbeth into doing things she wanted. For Example when  Lady Macbeth heard the prophecy that he will be king, she did her best in order to make Macbeth king, in order to do this King Duncan had to be murdered, Macbeth wasn’t completely sure about killing Duncan because Macbeth is Duncan’s pet but Lady Macbeth said to Macbeth ‘‘When you durst do it, then you are a man’’ this quote shows us that Lady Macbeth is ordering Macbeth to Murder Duncan or he is not a man, this shows us how Lady Macbeth could Manipulate Macbeth into doing her dirty work. Eventually Macbeth followed out with the plan and killed Duncan, shortly after he is announced the new king of Scotland. Once Macbeth becomes king we hardly see Lady Macbeth on stage, this is to signify that Macbeth is starting to forget her and her dominancy. To reinforce this point During the Play Lady Macbeth Dies and Macbeth responds as ‘‘she should have died hereafter’’ this quote shows us how he doesn’t care for Lady Macbeth anymore and now she has become a recessive part of his life. This has showed us the moral change of the character of Macbeth dramatically from being a caring partner to careless partner; this is the second way that the character of Macbeth changes.

Macbeth changes physically from being a night and shining armour of Scotland to a Worried Tyrant. Macbeth used to be ‘Mr Popular’ when he was a Thane, everyone wanted to meet and greet him. When Macbeth became king the power got to his head and changed his physical appearance. When Macbeth was Thane he was strong, fit and a Modest Solder. But when Macbeth became king he couldn’t sleep, he had seen visions of Daggers everywhere and furthermore he became a cruel leader killing new borns and female women. The witches predicted ‘‘the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth’’ Macbeth sees himself as an invincible King that cannot be beaten because the witches have told only non woman born can kill him. Macbeth gets worried that he might be defeated so he sets out and kills every Female and New Born Making him a cruel Tyrant. The people of Scotland respond and say ‘‘some say he’s Mad, others that lesser hate him, Do call it Valiant fury.’’ This shows us how Macbeth changes from ‘Mr Popular’ to a cruel leader. Furthermore this new Prophesy of the witches adds to Macbeths Physical Illness, Macbeth can’t sleep and hears a voice ‘‘sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleeps the innocent sleep" Macbeth cannot sleep anymore because he is having awakenings on how he had murdered King Duncan, this leads his to see visions of daggers everywhere, the no sleep made Macbeth look and feel tired making him turn into a cruel leader. This shows us how Macbeth turns into a Paranoid and Cruel Tyrant.

Macbeth shows us his physical and moral changes throughout the play, he shows us how he changed from being ‘Mr Popular’ to becoming a Cruel Tyrant like Adolf Hitler, he shows us how he changed from being a loveable partner to a cruel partner and he shows us how he changed from being a stress free person to becoming a worried tyrant. Macbeth teaches us we should not do anything for power or we will be changed and corrupted.
